Israel may soon offer Jewish settlers compensation to leave their homes in the Gaza Strip, as part of a plan to withdraw all settlers from the occupied Palestinian territory by October, 2005.

The proposal would begin offering settlers compensation this August and is contained in a withdrawal timetable presented Wednesday to an Israeli government committee overseeing the planned pullout.

At the G8 summit of industrialized nations in the United States, leaders welcomed the prospect of an Israeli pullout from Gaza and four settlements in the West Bank.

The leaders renewed their support for the so-called "road map" peace plan and called for Russia, the United Nations, the United States and the European Union to meet in the region before the end of June.
