Ask The Rabbi
Question ?
I am a Jewess of Orhodox background I married out of the faith and my ex husband converted reform We are now divorced with no get I have been told I don t need one by an Orthodox source and have three lovely children I am to remarry in an Orthodox shul and my children very much look to my new husband to be as a father figure My son wants to know whether he is allowed to assume his adoptive fathers Hebrew name as he wants to acknowledge him at his barmitzvah Is this permitted by Halachah?

Answer:
Your son's name sould really be ben Avraham as his father is not Jewish. Avraham is the generic father of all Jews, and in your case calling him Ben Avraham would take away the tensions caused by changing from his biological to adoptive father's name.

Ask the Rabbi is produced in association with Aish UK.
