We are studing Judaism for GCSE RE and we wondered whether you could give us a Jewish perspective on Life after Death?
I think you will find that all major religions believe in life after death.
From a Jewish perspective, we believe that God put us in this world for our pleasure. He has given us the opportunity to fulfil our potentials, to choose to do what is right and develop a relationship with God Himself.
The physical world is merely the place where we can nurture that relationship, but not the place of the ultimate feeling of that relationship.
As a sporting analogy you might say that God wants us to have the pleasure of winning a gold medal, but any athlete will tell you that the pleasure is directly proportional to the pain of the previous four years training. This world is the 4 years training. If we do the training, we get the pleasure. As in athletics, it's not even a question of reward and punishment, it's just a consequence of the level of fitness you have attained.
