Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has invited the opposition Labour party to join a broad coalition government with his Likud party.

Mr. Sharon said he would meet Sunday with opposition leader Shimon Peres to discuss the proposal.

Mr. Sharon's plan to withdraw from the Gaza Strip by the end of 2005 has drawn criticism from his traditional hard-line supporters and cost him his parliamentary majority.

Inviting the centre-left Labour Party into the coalition would give Mr. Sharon a new majority in the Israeli parliament.
