Ask The Rabbi
Question ?
I am interested to know the significance of wine at the passover meal Is there an alternative for those who cannot or will not dirnk wine?

Answer:
The Talmud discusses the general importance of wine. It mentions the verse in Psalms : "Wine gladdens man's heart". THe second attribute is that wine has the ability to fill you up, taken in the right quantity.

Wine is therefore used at all happy or significant Jewish occasions eg when sanctifying the Sabbath, at a circumcision and a wedding.

Passover is the time we celebrate Jewish nationhood, and the liberation from Egypt.

For those who can't stomach wine, grapejuice is an acceptable alternative. For those with severe allergies to both, a Rabbi needs to be consulted, and an exemption can be made on a case by case basis.
