Israel demolishes buildings

Last updated: 2004-08-12

Israeli tanks and bulldozers have demolished a number of houses in a raid on a Gaza Strip refugee camp.

Residents say Israeli forces knocked down at least six buildings in the Rafah camp in southern Gaza.

The Israeli army says the buildings were abandoned and used by militants to launch attacks.

A top U.N. official Wednesday accused both Israel and the Palestinian Authority of failing to meet international obligations to protect civilians.

U.N. Undersecretary General for Political Affairs Kieran Prendergast said the Palestinian Authority has not done enough to stop terrorist attacks originating from areas under its control. He criticized Israel for its settlement activity, adding that Israeli authorities have an obligation to protect Palestinian life and not to destroy property.
