Israel has announced plans to build hundreds of new settler homes in the West Bank, in defiance of the US-backed "road map" peace plan.

Under the latest Israeli plan, authorities say contractors will build 300 housing units in two settlements near Jerusalem. Last week, Israel announced plans to build 1,000 new units in existing West Bank settlements.

Monday's announcement follows a report in the New York Times on an apparent shift in U.S. policy in which the Bush administration is now backing some new settlement construction.

A US State Department spokesman Monday said he would not speak to the specifics of the current situation, but that the United States continues to support an end to settlement activities in the occupied territories.
