The Board of Deputies is supporting the Sudan Emergency Appeal launched by World Jewish Aid.
The humanitarian situation in the Darfur region of southern Sudan is continuing to deteriorate. Ethnic violence against the population of the region is growing and there is the prospect of a massive catastrophe on the scale of the genocide in Rwanda ten years ago.
The World Jewish Aid appeal, which is supported by a range of Jewish organsiatons from across the community, is directed towards providing food and other basic requirements to help more than one million people who have been forced from their homes.
Board Director General Neville Nagler commented; "As Jews we have a responsibility not to remain as bystanders in the face of this appalling violence and ethnic cleansing. The Board is urging all its members and their constituencies to support the appeal by World Jewish Aid and contribute generously towards humanitarian relief.
"We are also concerned that Sudan is experiencing ethnic cleansing backed by its government. We call on the British government to initiate and support international action to combat these deliberate crimes against humanity."
