Three Israeli soldiers and three Palestinian militants have been killed in pitched gunbattles at an Israeli army post guarding a Jewish settlement in the Gaza Strip.
Israel says the gunmen infiltrated the guardpost in southern Gaza under a blanket of fog early Thursday, triggering a 45-minute shootout. One of the gunmen escaped, but was later killed after opening fire on journalists touring the battle site. Authorities say one reporter was wounded in the second exchange. Three Palestinian militant groups jointly claimed responsibility for the attack.
Hours later, Israel says militants in northern Gaza fired homemade missiles into the southern Israeli town of Sderot, wounding one woman.
On Wednesday, a suicide bombing in Jerusalem killed two Israeli policemen and wounded 17 other people.
