Jihad leader killed

Last updated: 2004-10-05

An Israeli missile attack in Gaza City has killed a top official of the Palestinian militant organization, Islamic Jihad, and another member of the group.

Witnesses say Israeli aircraft fired missiles Tuesday at a car in which 40-year-old Bashir al-Dabash and the other man were riding. Three bystanders were slightly hurt.

Israel has vowed to hunt down and kill the leaders of Palestinian militant groups.

Earlier in the day, military sources in Israel said negotiations were under way with the Palestinian Authority aimed at ending the Israeli army's Gaza offensive as well as militant rocket attacks on Israel. The talks are said to have begun Monday with an unidentified third party acting as intermediary.

More than 65 Palestinians and at least five Israelis have been killed since Israel pushed into Gaza last week.
