Auschwitz? Don't know

Depite high profile films such as Schindler's List that show what happened during the Second World War, a new survey by the BBC has found that 45% of the population have never heard of Auschwitz nor are fully aware of the Holocaust.

Among women and those under 35, the poll by the BBC found that 60% had no idea what Auschwitz was.

A new BBC series, Auschwitz: The Nazis & the 'Final Solution' will be broadcast in January and aims to educate people on the tragedy of the concentration camp where more than one million people both Jewish and not died.

"We were amazed by the results of our audience research" says series producer Laurence Rees. "It's easy to presume that the horrors of Auschwitz are engrained in the nation's collective memory but obviously this is not the case," said producer Laurence Rees.

"The research reinforced the importance of making this series and trying to ensure the atrocities that unfolded at Auschwitz are never forgotten."

The series is the result of three years of research and based on nearly 100 interviews with survivors as well as those who were responsible.
