Prince Harry has apologised for being pictured in a khaki Nazi uniform after The Sun newspaper revealed he wore it to a native and colonial theme fancy dress party.
The 20-year-old second son of Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana is seen holding a cigarette and a drink and wearing a swastika armband in his replica fascist soldier outfit.
The shocking photo was taken at a private house party in Wiltshire, southwest England in which Harry's older brother William also attended dressed as a big cat.
"I am very sorry if I caused any offence or embarrassment to anyone. It was a poor choice of costume and I apologise," Prince Harry said in a statement.
The Board of Deputies of British Jews said: "It was clearly in bad taste, especially in the run-up to holocaust memorial day on January 27, which the Royal Family will be taking a leading role in commemorating."
"This incident serves as another reminder, if one were needed, of the importance for Holocaust Education particularly amongst the young.
"Prince Harry has apologised for his ill-judged actions," said Dr. Stephen Smith - Chair Designate of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust. "We need to move on to ensure that the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, which will be marked by Holocaust Memorial Day 2005, is commemorated in the dignified fashion which survivors, their families and liberators deserve, and which is a tribute to the memory of all those that were murdered."
