Palestinian militants killed six Israelis and seriously injured four others in an attack on a key border crossing in central Gaza late Thursday night.

Three Palestinian gunmen stormed the Israeli terminal at the Karni crossing point after using a bomb to blow a hole in the building's perimeter. All three militants were killed during the carefully coordinated attack.

The Israeli army says Palestinians also fired a mortar shell at rescue workers as they tried to evacuate the wounded.

Three militant groups, Hamas, al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade and the Popular Resistance Committee claimed responsibility for the attack.

It is the biggest attack since Mahmoud Abbas was elected Palestinian president last Sunday and appeared to be a direct challenge to the new Palestinian leader who has repeatedly called for an end to violence.

Shortly after the attack Israeli helicopters fired missiles at a clinic in Gaza Israel says has ties with Palestinian militants.
