Kaufman goes to Auschwitz

Last updated: 2005-01-18

At the two days of commemoration ceremonies to be held in Poland on 26 and 27 January, to mark the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the Board of Deputies of British Jews will be represented by Vice President Flo Kaufmann, who will be a member of the high level British delegation led by Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, whilst Foreign Secretary Jack Straw will head the ministerial delegation.

The commemorative events, hosted by President Aleksander Kwasniewski, are being organised by the Polish government with the assistance of the European Jewish Congress.

Events will include memorial prayers, an international forum "Let my People Live!" in Krakow, and an official ceremony in commemoration of the victims of Auschwitz-Birkenau,  on site,  at Auschwitz-Birkenau.
In anticipation of this historic event, Flo Kaufmann noted "I am conscious of the honour, and responsibility, of representing British Jewry in this way.  It is a small way of paying tribute to all those who, within living memory, paid the ultimate price for being Jewish.  Because of their sacrifice, today's generation is able to enjoy the freedoms, which were so sadly denied to those who perished in the Shoah.   It is our responsibility to make sure that these lessons must be taught to all future generations, regardless of their religion."
