The Board of Deputies has elected new Honorary Officers at its plenary meeting held in London yesterday.

Mr Henry Grunwald QC was unanimously elected President of the representative body of British Jewry, becoming the lay leader of the 300,000 strong community. Mr Grunwald, aged 53, is a practising barrister and has been a Vice-President of the Board since 1997.

The Board’s three Vice-Presidents are:

Mr Jerry Lewis – Senior Vice-President (Parliamentary and diplomatic journalist)

Mrs Flo Kaufmann JP (Treasurer of the Board 1997-2003, and a company director)

Mrs Eleanor Lind QC (practising barrister specialising in family law)

The new Treasurer of the Board is Mr Clive Lewisohn JP (company director)

Henry Grunwald QC told the Board: “I am excited and honoured to be President of the Board, but I know that the next three years will be an enormous challenge. The British Jewish community is facing threats and pressures that we have not seen for a long time. I intend to do all I can to promote co-operation between the different sectors of our community, and to work with other faith and minority communities, to build a society based on respect, tolerance and mutual understanding.”
