The former director of communications for Chief Rabbi Sir Jonathan Sacks has been appointed the first full-time director of the Jewish Leadership Council.

Jeremy Newmark, takes over from Doug Krikler who left earlier this year to become chief executive of UJIA.

The Jewish Leadership Council was created in 2003 with a number of aims including improving Jewish communal representation, better relations with the Government and look at ways to unite the community.

The JLC will be based within the London offices of the Board of Deputies.

"We are delighted to have made an appointment of this calibre," said JLC chairman and Board of Deputies president Henry Grunwald. "Jeremy's experience in both Jewish affairs and the wider public arena will enable the JLC to progress, expand and develop our agenda."

Mr Newmark is looking forward to the challenge to establish the organisation. "I am tremendously excited to have been given the opportunity to play a role in leading the JLC beyond its initial launch phase and to develop its profile and influence within and beyond the Jewish community," he said.
