World Jewish Relief dinner
World Jewish Relief has raised over £1.1m at its annual dinner held at the Guildhall in London.
Money raised from the evening will be used for various projects in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union which was also the theme of the night.
During his speech to guests, WJR chairman Nigel Layton spoke about the importance of not forgetting Jewish people across the world especially those in small communities.
Guests were told of the work done in energising life in Zaparozhye in the Ukraine under the WJR's Our Town Project. From virtually nothing, the community now has better facilities for leading a Jewish life with a community centre, children's home and educational services on offer.
The Our Town project will also be expanded with another project in Ukraine, this time in
Krivoy Rog which is home to 17,000 Jewish people.
Guest speaker on the night was writer Ronald Harwood, best known for his screenplay of The Pianist as well as plays including The Dresser.
