MEPs URGED TO SUPPORT INQUIRY INTO EU FUNDING IN MIDDLE EAST

Last updated: 2002-12-02

The Board of Deputies has written to all British Members of the European Parliament urging them to support requests to set up a temporary committee of inquiry to investigate EU funding in the Middle East.

The Board is deeply concerned by the growing allegations that millions of Euros sent from the European Union to the Palestinian Authority are being used to fund Palestinian terrorism. As we have seen on an almost daily basis, Palestinian terrorists are wreaking death and devastation on innocent civilians.

In order to set up a committee of inquiry, the European Parliament must receive at least 157 signatures, of which over 100 have already been received.

In a letter to the MEPs, Board Vice-President Tony Sacker wrote: “The situation in the Middle East is heartbreaking for both sides and there can be no peaceful resolution of this conflict until all acts of terrorism have ceased. Ensuring that EU funds are not used to fund terrorism will be an important contribution to the peace process.”
