Sacha Baron Cohen has been recognised by his comedy peers and has been named Writer Of The Year at this year's British Comedy Awards.

In the star-studded ceremony, pop queen Madonna had the honour of introducing Baron Cohen to his award. Madonna worked with him on the video for her 2000 hit Music, in which as his alter ego Ali G was Madonna's limo driver.

She revealed that when having dinner with Baron Cohen and his family at their North London home, his mother was "expecting a nice Jewish girl".

On receiving the award, Baron Cohen joked that "Borat is guest of honour at the Holocaust denial conference in Tehran."

Poking fun at recent news that other people are attempting to sue him for misrepresentation in the Borat movie, Baron Cohen revealed that the Kazakhstan TV reporter himself is suing filmmakers Fox as "he thought he was taking part in a documentary and not a comedy movie".

Other Jewish winners on the night included Matt Lucas for his Little Britain stage show, and Larry David, who won Best International Comedy for Curb Your Enthusiasm.
