Jewish theatre talent has been shortlisted at this year’s prestigious Laurence Olivier Awards.

Tom Stoppard’s Rock 'n’ Roll, about Communist Prague , is leading the way with nominations in a number of categories, including Best New Play. Its stars Rufus Sewell and Sinead Cusack are also nominees, for Best Actor and Best Actress.

Patrick Marber’s Don Juan In Soho, an interpretation of Moliere’s play, is among the nominees for Best New Comedy, while Arthur Miller’s classic The Crucible is in the running for Best Revival.

In the Best New Musical category Caroline, Or Change, by Tony Kushner and Jeanine Tesori, is among the nominees, which also include the Sesame Street spoof Avenue Q, co-created by Jeff Marx. A new version of The Gershwins’ classic Porgy And Bess has also been shortlisted.

Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday In The Park With George has been nominated for Outstanding Musical Production, as has The Sound Of Music, featuring music and lyrics by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein.

Also competing in the category is Cabaret, the classic musical set in pre World War II Germany, featuring music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb.

The awards will be handed out next month.
