British Jewish talent has been recognised in the nominations for this year's Academy Awards.

Leading the way to a potential Oscar is filmmaker Stephen Frears, who is in the running for Best Director for The Queen. He'll be competing for the prize alongside such Hollywood heavyweights as Martin Scorsese and Clint Eastwood. The film has also been nominated for Best Picture, as well as Best Actress for Helen Mirren and Best Original Screenplay.

A jubilant Frears, who learned of his nomination while at the South Bank Show Awards in London, is said to be "stunned", and has said he will have to get a whole new outfit for the red carpet.

Meanwhile, funnyman Sacha Baron Cohen is also jumping for joy, along with his fellow Borat screenwriters including Dan Mazer, Todd Phillips, Peter Baynham and Anthony Hines, who have made the shortlist for Best Adapted Screenplay. Joining them on that list is fellow British Jew Patrick Marber, who has been nominated for Notes On A Scandal.

Elsewhere, other Jewish nominees include Philip Glass for Best Original Score for the fantasy film Pan's Labyrinth, and Randy Newman for Best Original Song for Our Tune, from the animated hit Cars.

The awards will be handed out at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre on February 25.
