Alan Arkin made it a weekend to remember at the Oscars last night when he followed up his Independent Spirit Award win with an Academy Award.
Many experts thought Arkin would lose to Oscars favourite Eddie Murphy in the Best Supporting Actor category, but his role as a curmudgeon in Little Miss Sunshine gave him the edge over the competition at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.
For Arkin, it was third time lucky to win an Oscar, as he was previously nominated twice, once in 1966 and again in 1968.
In his acceptmance speech, Arkin said:
I know youre not supposed to read but Id be totally incoherent if I didnt. Its handwritten, its short. More than anything, I am deeply moved by the open-hearted appreciation our small film has received. Which in these fragmented times speak so openly speak of the possibility of innocence, growth and connection.
On Saturday, the Catch 22 star scored the first of his weekend double at the Spirit Awards in Santa Monica, California.
