A packed crowd at London's Grosvenor House Hotel heard Home Secretary Dr John Reid pay tribute to Britain's Jewish community as an example of "successful integration in Britain".
Reid was addressing over 1,200 who attended the Community Security trust's annual dinner and also said it was Government importance to make Jews feel safe in the country.
"As Home Secretary my overriding priority is to create opportunity, provide security and reduce fear for everyone," he told those at the dinner. "I share the community's deep concern about attacks on Jewish people and property, and deplore attempts to deny the Holocaust. I want to see effective implementation of the strengthened legislation the Government has introduced to deal with hate crimes in recent years."
Among those attending were current and former Metropolitan Police Commissioners Sir Ian Blair and Lord Stevens and hairdressing icon Vidal Sassoon who has been active much of his life in combating anti-Semitism.
