Israel has sacked its ambassador to El Salvador after local police found him drunk, naked and tied up with sex bondage gear two weeks ago in the garden of his residence.

According to local and Israeli media reports, the diplomat, Tsuriel Raphael was discovered by police and after they removed a rubber ball from his mouth, he was able to identify himself as Israel's ambassador to the country.

Raphael is said to be in his 50s and was six months into his first ambassadorial posting in the Central American country. Prior postings had included the United States.

In a statement, Israeli Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Zehavit Ben-Hillel said he is now back in Israel "The ministry sees his behaviour as unbecoming of a diplomat," she said.
