The prize, which is worth £2,000, is awarded to a work published in English by a Welsh writer over the past two years, either in poetry, short stories, literary criticism or Welsh history.
The 83-year-olds collection of poems was published in 2006, and featured two works written after the tragic death of his wife Joan in a car accident in 2005. Abse suffered broken ribs in the crash.
The writer, who studied medicine, published his first volume of poems in the late 1940s, and is renowned for his passion of being Jewish and Welsh.
Details of the winner will be announced at a ceremony on April 27.
