It is with our deepest sorrow that we announce the death, earlier today of former US Honorary Officer Alan Kennard.

Alan Kennard was an Honorary Officer of the United Synagogue from 1992 - 1999. He was Chairman of its Kashrut Committee from 1992 - 1996. He was the Chairman of the US Constitution Committee from 1992 - 1999 and was the President of the US Affiliates Committee 1996-1999. Following his tenure as a US Honorary Officer he continued to serve as a member of both the Constitution and Affiliates Committee until his death. In 1996 he was Chairman of the US Declining Communities Committee. Mr Kennard also oversaw the process of the sale of part of the library of the London Beth Din over the past three years.

Alan was a member of the London Board of Shechitah for 15 years and is the incumbent President. He was Vice President from 1997 - 2002 and Treasurer from 1996 -1997.

President of the United Synagogue Peter Sheldon said:

"Alan Kennard served the US in many different ways for a considerable number of years. He brought to his communal work, as he did to everything he undertook, great ability, deep knowledge, a profound understanding of the history and purpose of the US and a meticulous attention to every detail. He approached everything with great warmth and friendship and he will be sadly missed by everyone in the community who had the great fortune to deal with him over his long and varied communal career."

The Chief Rabbi, Dr Jonathan Sacks will attend the funeral which will take place at 4pm today at Bushey Cemetery.
