Kaplinsky in mega deal

BBC newsreader Natasha Kaplinsky is defecting to commercial broadcastFive to front its news programme in a deal said to be worth £1m a year.

"After five incredibly rewarding years at the BBC, I found the chance to work with the team at Five too exciting to pass up," she said. "Five has changed the face of news before, and now they are going to do it again. I can't wait to be a part of it."

Since joining the BBC from Sky News in 2002, Kaplinsky has proved to be a popular attraction and has presented other BBC shows including Eurovision programme Making Your Mind Up as well as winning Strictly Come Dancing.

Earlier this year, she took part in Who Do You Think You Are? in which she explored her eastern European Jewish roots.

Kaplinsky starts he new role at Five in early 2008 and will be on-screen for its 5.30pm and 7pm news shows.
