Police in east London are appealing for information following a desecration which caused damaged to 40 gravestones and tombs at Plashet Cemetery and also saw an attempt to cause a fire.
According to police, the damage was believed to have occurred last Saturday and are investigating whether it was caused by one individual or a gang.
Among the destruction caused were headstones smashed, decorative figures removed and the marble surrounding some graves pulled up. A small fire was also lit against one of the walls of the cemetery.
"We are treating this as a religiously motivated crime and it's shocking to think someone would deliberately cause damage to a burial site and so much distress to local families," said detective Gerry Healy from Plaistow Community Safety Unit who is leading the investigation.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Plaistow Community Safety Unit on 020 7275 5736 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 55 111.
