Peace for Israel and Gaza rally

Thousands of pro-Israel supporters are expected to attend a peace rally in central London to denounce Hamas and its role in causing the current Gaza crisis.

The Peace for the People Of Israel and Gaza Rally is being organised for Sunday by The Board of Deputies of British Jews and The Jewish Leadership Council (JLC) and will take place in Trafalgar Square from 11am.

"This rally will mark the culmination of five days of action for Israel that have been called by our communal leadership," said JLC chief executive Jeremy Newmark. "We hope that the community will turn out in large numbers to highlight our support for the people of Israel and Gaza and to make it clear that it is the actions of Hamas that have led to the deaths of ordinary Israelis and Palestinians."

The cross communal event is calling on all supporters of Israel and those who seek stability in the region.

"Everyone should support Israel's determination to weaken the hold of the terrorists.  It is only when terror and blackmail are successfully opposed that the moderate majority can feel safe to make peace," said Rabbi Dr Tony Bayfield, head of the Movement for Reform Judaism.

Chief Rabbi, Sir Jonathan Sacks added: "On Sunday we will come together once again in unity to show our solidarity for the people of Israel. I urge you all to join us. Our prayers at this time continue to be for a just and lasting peace for the people of the region".

As well as the main London event, a smaller rally in Manchester for supporters of Israel in the north of England will take place at Manchester’s Albert Square.
