More than 240 Ethiopian Jews have arrived in Israel as part of Operation Dove's Wings which aims within the next 12 months to bring the remaining Jews of Ethiopia to the Jewish state.

In total around 120,000 Ethiopian Jews live in Israel and there are said to be 2000 remaining in the Gondar area of the African country.

During the summer, the government of Israel decided to increase the rate of Jewish emigrationn from Ethiopia and has reopened a Jewish Agency absorptiion centre which can accommodate up to 600 people.

“What a miracle. I just met a brother and a sister who were reunited today after 25 years. Well, we the Jewish people have just been reunited after 25 centuries. When Ethiopian Jewry left Israel, there was no Hannukah. Now we can celebrate both Hannukah and Yom Haatzmaut together," said Natan Sharansky, chairman of the Jewish Agency for Israel.

He added: "Together we are writing the last page of the history of Ethiopian Jewry. We are now bringing all of our brothers from Africa to Israel. This is happening thanks to the State of Israel, world Jewry and our Christian allies."
