Attack on Neve Shalom

Following the terrorist attacks in Istanbul, the Chief Rabbi, Dr Jonathan Sacks sent the following message to the Chief Rabbi of Turkey, Rabbi Yitzhak Elka and to the Istanbul Jewish Community:

“Personally and on behalf of the entire Anglo-Jewish community, I wish to express our shock and grief at the terrible tragedy that struck the Jewish community of Istanbul this Shabbat. Words cannot express our feelings at this murderous attack and its many innocent victims. Our hearts and our prayers are with you. We pray to G-d to send healing to the wounded and comfort to the bereaved. May He be with you at this dark time, bringing you strength and sparing you all future grief.”

The Chief Rabbi’s message was delivered in person yesterday, by the Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams, who is currently visiting Istanbul.  Dr Williams interrupted his pre-planned trip in order to visit the site of the Neva Shalom Synagogue which was badly damaged in Saturday’s bombings.  The Chief Rabbi spoke to the Archbishop shortly before he flew to Turkey and the Archbishop expressed his condolences to the Jewish community.
