Richard Dreyfuss, Mel Brooks and Lee Evans
American actor Richard Dreyfuss and British comedian Lee Evans are to star as Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom in the London production of The Producers, which is due to open in the West End next November.
The show, based on Mel Brooks 1968 cult film, centres around washed-up theatre agent Bialystock (played in the film by Zero Mostel), who teams up with nervous accountant Leo Bloom (originally played by Gene Wilder) to create a flop musical. However the scheme begins to unravel once the show, Springtime For Hitler, hits the stage.
Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick played the roles in the Broadway production, which won 12 Tony theatre awards and has played to packed houses since it opened in 2001. Brooks has been quick to praise the casting of the London production. These guys look so good together - they were born to play these parts," he told the Evening Standard. Dreyfuss will play the role of Bialystock while Evans ! will play Bloom in the production, tentatively scheduled to open at Londons Drury Lane Theatre on November 9 2004.
Actor turned Los Angeles governor Arnold Schwarzegger has taken part in a Menorah-lighting ceremony outside the State Capitol in Sacremento. The ceremony, which took place on the first night of the festival, saw Schwarzenegger being presented with a Menorah by Rabbi Chaim Cunin of Chabad California, as well as dancing the Hora with Jewish leaders from around the state, and handing out chocolate Chanukah coins to children who attended the event.
- Comedian Lenny Bruce has been given a posthumous pardon 39 years after he was found guilty of obscenity during a performance at a New York club. Governor George Pataki, said the action was a symbolic reminder of American citizens right to free speech.
