Board welcomes Wiesenthal award

Last updated: 2004-02-24

The Board of Deputies has great pleasure in welcoming the Honorary Knighthood awarded to Simon Wiesenthal by the Queen, in recognition of his lifetime of services to humanity.

His tireless efforts in bringing Nazis to justice and in preserving the memory of their victims undoubtedly means that the entire Jewish people, for whom Simon Wiesenthal has worked his whole life, will take pride in this achievement.

Mr Wiesenthal's many achievements speak for themselves. But that so few Knighthoods are awarded to foreign nationals means that this honour takes on even greater significance.

Board Director General Neville Nagler commented: "The entire Jewish community is delighted that the Queen has decided to honour a man whose standing in the international arena in the fight against antisemitism and racism in all its forms is unparalleled. This award is a fitting tribute for a life-time's commitment by a truly unique individual."
