Ask The Rabbi
Question ?
I hope you can help me find information to gain understanding to the concept and use of burial robes in earlier times of Jewish life

Answer:
The burial robe worn is called a kittel. It is the same robe that is worn at a wedding and on Yom Kippur, the day of atonement.

It is a white pocketloss robe, and symbolises freedom from sin. White is the colour depicting purity, innocence. Having no pockets symbolises inability to steal. When someone is dead, they are no longer shackled by the desire to sin. This is oppsed to the wedding and Yom Kippur when the sins are forgiven.
