Why is it common for Jewish households to place covers over mirrors when a relative dies?
I found in a book about customs that there is an evil eye on the replication of an image. I suppose that at a importune time, like a recent loss, we try to avoid the evil eye.
This concept may be a bit alien, but I think most people relate in someway to keeping your earnings a secret. We don't want people to make comments about our good fortune. We feel, in some way, that this may jeopardise our good fortune. A reflected image of oneself has a similar impact.
