Why don t Ashkenazi Jews name their children after people that are living?
Children are usually named after the dead. The idea being that the soul of the departed will have an affect on the baby.
Ashkenazi Jews are concerned that if you name after a living person, an "evil eye" is placed on that person and they may die.
