In an Olympic year, Middlesex-based Staines Synagogue was proud to to have a gold medalist in its midst in the shape of Ladies Guild chair, Phyllis Conway, who was one of the overall winners at the Volunteers are US awards held at St. John's Wood Synagogue last month.

In the presence of the Chief Rabbi, she was presented with her gold medal by Maggie Semple, Chief Executive of the Experience Corps.
 
Her citation read:  "Phyllis has been a dedicated hard working volunteer in the community for over 30 years. She helps to organise the Friendship Club, the Ladies Guild, catering for all kiddushim and shul functions. She has been on the Board for over 20 years, and manages all the welfare activities, as well as being involved with the day to day management of the shul. She also lectures on Jewish Affairs to schools and womens groups."
