In 2001, the UK had its first census ever to ask a question on religion, this combined with on going research by organisations such as the Board of Deputies has produced some useful statistics on UK Jews. How many Jews are there in the UK?
According to the 2001 Census, 267,000 people classified themselves as being Jewish. In 1995, the Board of Deputies put the figure at 285,000. In terms of the number of Jews being represented in a council, the 2001 Census found that Barnet has the highest proportion of Jewish people (14.8 per cent). Meanwhile, one person in nine of the population of Hertsmere in Hertfordshire, is Jewish. Where do Jews live? Jews can be found all across the UK with the vast majority being in the greater London area. According to the Board of Deputies, this comprises 72% of British Jewry.
